Park visitor struck, hurt by bison

(From the Cody Enterprise, Wednesday, July 21, 2010)

A visitor from Utah was injured by a bison in a thermal area near Old Faithful on Monday night.

At about 8:30 p.m. July 19, a 49-year-old woman and a 61-year-old male family member were exiting the Biscuit Basin thermal area to rejoin their family group in the parking lot, when a bison emerged from nearby brush and charged them.  (I’m willing to bet they were trying to get pictures of the buffalo and not innocently minding their business as they claimed.)

The woman was struck and flipped in the air by the bison, park spokesman Al Nash said.  (Where’s a video camera when you need one?)

The woman sustained injuries as a result of the bison’s impact and subsequent fall to the ground.

As her male family member attempted to escape the bison’s charge, he tripped and fell, sustaining injuries to his shoulder, hand and foot, though he was not injured by the bison.  (Isn’t that what women do in horror films?)

The family proceeded in their own vehicle toward Jackson, but were intercepted by park rangers near Grant Village, where the rangers and EMT staff provided medical assistance and ambulance transports to the hospital in Jackson for both people.

Nash said this is the second time a park visitor has been charged and injured by a bison this summer.  (Damn.  I missed the first one.)

He said a bull bison can stand 6-feet tall, weigh up to 2,000 pounds, and run at speeds up to 30 mph, while bison cows often will protect their calves if there is a perceived threat.  (No shit.)

The summer scorecard is:

  • Buffalo: 2
  • Bears: 1
  • Humans: 1

Looks like the animals are winning again.

This sounds a lot like the dude and the chick were running away and he left her behind. As the woman was caught and mauled, he turned around and THAT is when he fell. This is not a manly man.

I have a feeling they will be re-evaluating their future family vacations together.

My boyfriend reckons he would leave me behind if zombies chased us (they’d eat my brain and he could get away). I just nod sadly – but I know inside that HE has asthma and I don’t.

HAHAHA! Men always forget their weaknesses.

I heard on the news this morning that somewhere, a bear stole a car. Some guy parked his car in a forest or near a forest. He left his windows open and a peanut butter sandwich inside the car. A small black bear crawled through the windows and managed to shift the car into neutral and had it roll down a hill. The bear did put the hazard flashers on though.

HAHAHAHA! I hope the bear put on his seat belt.

Don’t forget to tally the wolves in. What’s their score so far?

Bison. Can’t live with ’em, can’t shoot ’em in a national park. Whattaya gonna do?

The wolves haven’t mauled any people yet. They are smarter than they look.

That would be my luck… Go to Yellowstone for the first time in my idiot life…get gored to death by a raging Bison….

You don’t have to worry too much about them if you STAY AWAY FROM THEM! I’ve been to Yellowstone hundreds of times and have never had any trouble with the animals.
